First let’s start at the beginning Etsy was born in June 18, 2005 and quickly attracted a huge following of people who wanting to sell online but didn’t really know how to setup a website of their own.  They also loved the power and strength of the Etsy brand. Etsy was a win win for everyone.

But that was a long time ago and now the Etsy brand is attracting sellers from everywhere, attracted by the very thing that attracted early Etsy sellers to the platform.  So with more and more sellers selling more and more products the Etsy brand is losing some of it’s luster.

Here are some comments from recent Facebook group chat.

One of the biggest issues I believe with Etsy is the inability to capture your own customers details.  In essence you are no more than an employee of Etsy .  You have no control!

But what is the solution to this quandary?  On one hand you like the tried and tested formula that Etsy provides but on the other know the good old days are long over and fees and more and more sellers are only going to increase. Etsy is a business like any other.  It wants to make more money to satisfy its shareholders.  And how does it do that?  Simple get more and more sellers onto the platform and raise prices.  It’s a tried and true method.

So what can you do?

The answer is to build your own website and take control of your own destiny.

But how do I do that?

First and most importantly you need to understand that building a website can be a simple procedure but can easily turn into a nightmare if you don’t know where to start or what provider to use.

We recommend Shopify

Shopify is the gentle giant of eCommerce with over 200,000 active businesses using the platform.  But Shopify started small first being an online skateboard shop.  Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Unsatisfied with the existing e-commerce products on the market, Lütke, a computer programmer by trade, decided to build his own.

The rest is history and I can testify to it’s power having moved to the platform 6 years ago after having an unsatisfactory experience on a competing platform.  Last year the eCommerce business we started sold for 6 figures.

However, the real power of Shopify is far more than it’s share price growth.  The real power of Shopify comes down to the control and flexibility you now have within the platform.  You see while Shopify powers your website you are the ultimate owner.  And with this power comes many benefits.  Lets look at them below.

Etsy vs Shopify Comparison Table

Please use the above table as a guide only.  Etsy has numerous advantages as does Shopify.  However the conclusion of this writer is that Etsy is ‘closed’ whereby Shopify is ‘open’.  The mere fact that Etsy does not allow you to export your reviews highlights the fact, that they own your store not you!

Etsy wants you to stay in the Etsy ecosystem as that is where it will make more money.  Whereas Shopify has a much wider view of the eCommerce world.  Allowing for massive scale and growth.

Conclusion

I think a wise move for any Etsy seller with reasonable sales is to look at opening a Shopify store right now.  If you don’t you run the risk of being the little fish in the big pond forever.
